The Making of Blue Pottery

Raw Materials Used

Unlike conventional pottery, which uses clay, Jaipur’s Blue Pottery involves an intricate mix of:

Quartz Powder

Glass Powder

Fuller’s Earth (Multani Miti)

Borax and Gum

Sodium Sulphate

Step-by-Step Process

Preparing the Dough – The powdered materials are mixed and kneaded into a soft dough.

Shaping the Items – Artisans mold the dough into plates, bowls, vases, tiles, and other decorative items.

Hand-Painting Designs – The items are meticulously hand-painted with floral and geometric patterns using cobalt oxide for the signature blue shade.

Glazing & Firing – A special glaze is applied, and the pieces are fired at low temperatures (850-900°C), ensuring their glossy finish.
